Job Overview
Updater, Inc. is seeking a seasoned Director of DevOps Engineering to lead our DevOps team with the MoveHQ division while fostering a culture of innovation, reliability, and collaboration. This leadership role demands a proven track record of delivering high-quality, secure, and scalable solutions within a fast-paced, startup environment. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will oversee a team of engineers and play a critical role in shaping the infrastructure and practices that power our services.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Drive the adoption and optimization of cloud technologies, including AWS, Cloudflare, Terraform, and Snowflake, ensuring alignment with business goals and industry best practices.
  • Leadership with Empathy: As a key member of the Technical Leadership team, collaborate across engineering and executive teams to anticipate needs, foster alignment, and develop solutions that balance technical excellence with business objectives.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Act as a bridge between technical and non-technical teams, effectively communicating priorities, roadmaps, and solutions to stakeholders at all levels, including the CISO, CEO, and engineering teams.
  • Operational Excellence: Establish and maintain an actionable monitoring system that ensures optimal visibility into system performance, minimizing false alarms while addressing real issues promptly.
  • Stakeholder Management: Build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear communication, alignment on goals, and timely delivery of solutions that meet diverse needs.
  • Strategic Growth: Lead a DevOps team of 5 engineers, with opportunities for growth tied to business objectives and team performance.
  • Best Practices: Implement scalable architecture and design patterns while ensuring compliance with security standards, including FedRAMP or equivalent programs.
  • Capacity Planning: Lead initiatives for resource management, capacity planning, and infrastructure optimization to ensure seamless scalability and reliability.
  • Problem Solving: Transform open-ended questions into actionable plans that can be implemented by the team to address complex business challenges effectively.

Requirements

  • Experience: 10+ years in DevOps, including 5+ years in leadership roles, with a proven ability to drive material business impact in fast-paced environments.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency with AWS, Cloudflare, Terraform, Snowflake, and other cloud-hosted solutions.
  • Compliance Navigation: Familiarity with security compliance frameworks, including FedRAMP or equivalent programs.
  • Leadership Skills: Experience managing teams in organizations with more than 25 engineers.
  • Startup Acumen: Proven track record of delivering services on time and within budget in startup cultures.
  • Monitoring Mastery: Demonstrated ability to create effective monitoring systems that balance visibility and noise reduction.
  • Design Knowledge: Strong foundation in software architecture, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts to both technical and executive audiences.
  • Problem Solving: Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to distill complex problems into actionable steps.

Compensation
This posting is anticipated to remain open until April 9, 2025. The new hire salary range for this position is $193,581- $276,544 annually. Factors which may affect the starting pay within this range include skills, experience, and other qualifications aligned with Updater's internal leveling guidelines.
